Michał encountered the other-worldly Silesian landscape for the first time in the 1970's + decided this is what he wanted to record photographically. His influences include surrealism, which inspired a movement in Poland called fotografia kreacyjna (creative photography) + the realism of British New Wave cinema of the late 1950's/early 1960's.

"Cała has become relatively well known in Poland, but he is still little known in the West despite the fact that his work bears comparison with masters such as Bill Brandt + Robert Frank."
Bill Kouwenhoven, British Journal of Photography (2007)
